Music is a unique way of communication that can inspire and motivate children. It is a vehicle for personal expression and it can play an important part in the personal development of individuals. Music reflects the culture and society we live in, and so the teaching of music enables children to better understand the world they live in and helps them to feel part of a community.

Music is valued and enjoyed by all at Pencombe. Each week, the school is filled with music through whole‑school and key stage singing assemblies, choir club, peripatetic music lessons and class music sessions. At Pencombe, music is recognised as an important academic subject that also plays a key role in enjoyment, creativity and enrichment.

During Key Stage 1

The children develop a love of music through singing, listening, playing instruments and creative exploration. Children experience a wide range of musical styles and learn to keep a steady beat, explore rhythm and pitch, and express ideas through sound. Music lessons build confidence, enjoyment and early musical skills, while encouraging pupils to listen carefully, perform together and talk about what they hear.

During Key Stage 2

The children build on their musical skills through singing, composing and performing. They explore a wide range of musical genres and learn about significant composers and musicians from different periods and cultures. Children develop their understanding of rhythm, pitch, notation and structure, while working collaboratively and confidently to perform and evaluate music. Music lessons encourage creativity, discipline and enjoyment, helping pupils grow as thoughtful and expressive musicians.

Music Curriculum

The National Curriculum for Music aims to ensure that all pupils perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians.

They should learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence.

Finally, to understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.

At Pencombe CofE Primary, we are dedicated to providing a wide range of opportunities that will encourage and enable children to enjoy music.

We develop a variety of skills through practical activities; playing of instruments, singing and moving to music to gain awareness and appreciation of differing musical styles and cultures, through listening and performing.
