Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Week

This week it has been STEaM Week at Pencombe (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths).
The week started with a whole school assembly followed by a carousel of science experiments.
These included:
  • The Magic Milk experiment that involves turning ordinary milk into an explosion of colour using food colouring and dish soap.
  • The Oobleck experiment where you mix custard powder and water to create Oobleck, a fluid that acts like a liquid when slow but solid under force.
  • The Lava Lamp experiment where the children filled a clear bottle with water, oil, food colouring, and Alka-Seltzer. They watched the bubbles rise as the reaction mimics a lava lamp!
  • The Sticky ice experiment by placing an ice cube in water, lie a string on top, and sprinkle salt. Wait, then lift—ice sticks to the string!
The children all worked together and had the best afternoon!

Mrs Lyons invited the Cherry parents into class on Tuesday for a fantastic Maths morning!
It was an opportunity for the children to play maths games with their families and share their mathematical knowledge!
These workshops are always valuable because it not only allows our children to be proud of their learning, it gives our parents an opportunity to see how our children learn, and also show ways to make maths engaging!
Thank you to everyone who came!
On Wednesday afternoon, we were very excited to announce Pencombe CofE Primary school’s very first science fair.
A few weeks ago, our children were invited to plan and create their own science experiments at home, individually or as a group, and showcase to the rest of the school and parents.
Not only was the fair a triumphant success, the children were outstanding, displaying overwhelming talent, and using high-level scientific vocabulary to exhibit their presentations.
A huge well done to all of the children involved, everyone commented on how excellent the afternoon was!
On Thursday morning, the girls in Oak and Willow class invited their mums in for a ‘Maths and Mums’ morning!
Prior to this, the girls completed an audit about their views on maths. Here were some of their responses:
“I find it too hard.”
”Boys find maths easier.”
“I find it sometimes boring because I don’t understand it.”
Therefore, in order to promote girls and maths, mums were invited in to take part in a ‘four operations’ child-led teaching session written by the girls, followed by a maths treasure hunt around the school!
It was an opportunity for the girls and their mums to work together to problem solve and to show that maths can be fun!
Thank you to everyone involved – it was brilliant!
