Sankofa Bird Printing

Oak Class have used the image of the Sankofa bird to link this term’s topic of the Transatlantic Slave Trade to their Art.

With its head turned back, sometimes grasping an egg, legs planted in the present and feet facing forward, the Sankofa bird symbolizes the philosophy of remembering the past in order to shape the future.
‘Sankofa’ means, literally, ‘go back and get it’, emphasising the importance of delving into history in order to progress consciously. It reminds us all to ask important questions about the past so that we can use history’s lessons to shape our future.

The children created their own bird design then transferred it on to a printing tile, carefully imprinting their design into the tile with the relief print method. They then used printing ink and a roller to print their Sankofa bird image onto paper.

They loved the process and are justifiably very proud of the results! Some of them even want to take printing up as a hobby!
