Practical Maths

To fully understand mathematical concepts, it’s very important that children have opportunities to extend their learning outside and by doing practical activities.

This week, Year 1 were using hoops and beanbags to make part whole models. They then were able to begin to write addition number sentences on the playground using chalk.

Year 2 were focusing on fact families using addition within 20. The children discussed that, to be part of a fact family, they need to use the same numbers. They used the tens frame and objects to visualise the bonds to 20. As a challenge, the children began to write subtraction number sentences to match their fact family.

After all of the hard work, the children decided to have an old-fashioned game of snakes and ladders!
