Exploring Our Local History: Pencombe and the World Wars

This week, in our History and Geography topic, Oak Class explored how World War I and World War II affected the local community of Pencombe. The children visited the war memorial to read the inscription, learn about those who sacrificed their lives, and identify the grid reference of the memorial.
They also had the opportunity to look through the very special Pencombe school logbooks, dating back to the 1800s. The children were fascinated by the entries from the war years, which showed how boys were needed to help work on the farms, while girls took part in lessons such as needlework. The logbooks also recorded how many evacuees attended the school during this time.
